The monsoons are almost here and it’s just going to get wet, wetter and wettest here onwards! There are two kinds of people, those who absolutely love the rains and those who absolutely hate it. You cannot be indifferent to the monsoons for sure!
There is definitely something about going for a bike ride in the rains, beautiful, romantic, soulful but at the same time you need to exercise caution.
It is definitely very inviting to go jetting out in the rain, but the roads are extremely slippery, visibility is always an issue and potholes here and there are safety concern for the rider as well as the health of the motorcycle. Here are some tips that can help you to have a smooth ride this monsoon.
First and foremost get your motorcycle checked up. Get it services so that if there is any mechanical issue that can be sorted before the onset of the monsoons, the rains are just going to amp up any issue if there is any.
Next check your brakes. The brakes should always be in top shape. If the pads or the liners are worn out then they reduce the efficiency of the brakes. You also need to ensure that the drum brakes are cleaned regularly and the break shoes or pads are replaced. If you have disc brakes then get them checked too. To avoid any mishap or disaster make sure that the brake oil is replenished from time to time.
Do a check up of your tires. Bald or worn out tires are extremely dangerous to use in the rainy season. If the tire is worn out then it is best to replace it. Check the tire tread too, the tread helps disperse the water, there should be a minimum of 2-3 mm of tread depth in the tires. While at it check the tire pressure too. It should be kept a little below the recommended PSI during dry season.
Get all other parts of the bike lubricated and prepped up. Ensure that the parts are rust free.
Get yourself some rain gear. Make sure that it is comfortable and roomy enough so as not to constrict your movements while riding. Also buy rainproof boots so that your feet are safeguarded. Ensure that the rain gear you buy is bright enough since visibility is an issue during the rains, so with bright colours you stand out on the road and the other vehicles can spot you from a distance.
Clean your helmet and don’t wear one with a dark visor. That will hamper visibility on the road. Make sure the visor is clean and scratch free, don’t apply any wax or product to keep it rainproofed, it will only add to more visibility issues.
Always carry a clean microfiber cloth to clean up your helmet or visor or mirrors at any point in time.
Ride carefully, keep your headlights on, maintain a distance from other vehicles in the rain, keep speed under check, and drive slower than you usually do. Don’t make sudden movements such as braking suddenly or taking a sharp turn, since the tires have low traction they may cause a crash.
So ride safe, ride responsibly and enjoy the weather!!
