Bollywood School Movies!

9-7

Getting back to school means the new clothes, new tiffin boxes and water bottles, new stationary, and who knows a new kid in class who you could befriend!

School movies are a very popular genre and Bollywood has churned out a good few of them.

More often than not school based movies have dealt with some underlying social theme and left an impact on us. Also the feel good and coming of age premise always makes us want to re-watch these movies.

Here is my list of tip Bollywood school based movies –

Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992)

We can’t have a list like this and not pay homage to this epic movie! It depicts the rivalry between schools with the bicycle race as the climax which decides who is the best of them all. On the side there is romance and friendship and everything you would expect in a good high school movie! Aamir Khan shines as always with Ayesha Jhulka as his Betty and Pooja Bedi as his Veronica. The music is still so memorable, I mean “Pehla Nasha” people, who can forget right!!

Student of the Year (2012)

Kjo means everything in OTT mode. Uber fancy school with kids who come from super affluent backgrounds, designer clothes , fancy cars and the works. It is a fun movie though, and given that it launched three great talents, don’t miss it. A love triangle with an athletic competition in the midst of it all, it’s a good popcorn worthy movie!

Stanley ka Dabba (2011)

A gem of a movie written and directed by Amole Gupte and starring his son Partho.  It a simple story about a boy who does not bring lunch to school every day but shares with his friends, and they are glad to do so because in return Stanley tells them the most imaginative tales, in the middle of it all is a villainous Hindi teacher who looks to devour the kids tiffin’s. The movie will remind you of your tiffin break at school, from the discarded boring jam bread to maggi and parathas that we would all devour!! A very endearing tale with brilliant performance from the whole cast. A must watch for sure.

Nil Battey Sannata (2015)

A story of a daughter who struggles with her studies and a mother who works menial jobs and is determined to make something of her daughter. When her daughter is near giving up, the mother gets a chance to continue and complete her own schooling in order to help her daughter cope with studies. It is a warm feel good movie on the possibility of upward mobility, if the drive is enough. Stellar performance by Swara Bhaskar and Ria Shukla.
