The kids have had it easy so far, now it’s time to get serious. Time to head back to school. New session for older kids or first time to school for the younger ones. Either way the parents have to prep the kids up so that they are ready and set to get back.
The kids need time to get back and adjust. We all feel a little nervous with new beginnings and kids are no different. They have it a little more difficult than usual since they cannot express as eloquently as adults.
Parents need to remind the kids that it is normal to be a little jittery and have butterflies in the tummy, but as days roll on, it will become routine and won’t be as tough anymore.
Kids could also get the jitters thinking of dealing with a new class teacher or facing the bully from last year. They could also be worried about all the new stuff that they will have to learn and deal with. So talk to them and find out what they are worried about.
The parents need to stress on the positives of getting back to school such as hanging out with old friends, meeting new classmates, buying cool school supplies, getting involved in sports and other activities.
To ensure that the kids are fresh and approach the new year at school with an open mind, it is important to establish a routine. They should be trained well in advance about wake up timings and sleep timings. Ease them in slowly but be firm. They need to be up and about well in advance so that there is no unnecessary panic and last minute scramble in the morning. So try and advance their wake up time and sleep time both by half an hour bit by bit from two weeks in advance.
The kids need to be trained to be responsible for their own things. Teach them to keep their clothes out for the next day and pack their bags. Make sure that you write down the need-to-know information such as emergency numbers, teachers name and contact, home address, bus drivers contacts etc.
The next thing that you need to set in place and as a parent it is your responsibility to see that the kids eat a healthy and filling breakfast before leaving for school. A full tummy with a good and hearty breakfast will ensure that the kids are more alert, do better and absorb more at school.
To get the kids excited about the new year take them gear shopping. Tool up!! Having the right tools will help them feel prepared. A new school bag is a must, something comfortable for the kids to use as well as spacious enough to carry all the supplies. Buy basics for sure and allow your kids a few cool splurges such as a cool notebook or fancy pens. The excitement to show off to their friends and use the supplies will make going back to school a lot more fun.
